In fact your RAM should be nearly full at all time for the best performance.

Most of this RAM is used by recently closed software in case you reopen them and tge PC will make room for stuff you actually open if needed. The PC will start to put stuff on the hard drive instead of ram, which is much slower.Įven if your computer says you only have 100mb of RAM free, it isn't an issue in the vast majority of situations.

The issue is when the ram is all used by active software. Closing chrome will keep it in the ram until another active software or game will need that ram. Now if you quit the gane, do some multitasking, then try to reload the game from scratch, a 16gb computer may be able to keep the game "cached" in the ram instead of the hard drive, so reloading would be faster. But if your gsme is using 4gb and Windows 2gb, there's zero advantage in gaming performance going from 8 to 16. It allows it to discard less stuff in the ram. Under that scenario and that scenario alone more RAM will speed the computer back up to what it was, not past. So to be clear if you're only using 6 gigs out of the 8 gigs you have you gain absolutely nothing from upgrading to 16 gigs, but if you manage to reach 8 gigs of usage with only 8 gigs in your system, any additional addresses being stored will go on your hard drive and slow the system down substantially. They are nearly double what they were 2 years ago so if you dont explicitly need more ram It's an upgrade you can pass on.Īnd to dispel a myth people keep pushing on this sub, more RAM does not increase the speed of your PC in any way shape or from unless you are running out of RAM with the amount you currently have and start using VRAM virtual memory which runs off your hard drive slowing process calls to a crawl. It's also worth mentioning right now ram prices are at an all time high. If you have a 5th or lower, it's not really worth it since you'll have to buy all new ram with your next CPU upgrade and unless you're running into memory issues an extra 8 gigs will do literally nothing to help performance (also DO NOT just toss another 8 gig stick in as it wont run at full speed without a matching stick to go with it). If you have a 6th or above go for it if you find a cheap 16 gig pair, it'll last you the next few upgrade cycles. Do you have a 6th 7th or 8th gen i5 or a a 5th or lower gen i5?
